Teaching and Producing Dance in Natal, Based on the Example of EDTAM
Wanie Rose –dancer, choreographer. Degree in Social Work from the UFRN. Artistic director of the Compagnie and Escola de Dança do Teatro Alberto Maranhão (EDTAM). Professor at the Escola Municipal de Ballet Prof. Roosevelt Pimenta. Previous coordinator of the Núcleo coreográfico do Espaço Cultural Casa da Ribeira.
The professional dance scene began developing in Natal in the state of Rio Grande do Norte in Northeast Brazil in 1974. Presently there are three public institutions for dance education, dance groups associated with the federal university of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), private dance schools, professional companies for contemporary dance, companies for dancers with or without handicaps, dance in schools and independent groups. EDTAM, associated with the federal Fundação Jose Augusto, was founded in 1985 by the professors Edson Claro und Carmen Borges. This lecture seeks to provide an introduction to the panorama of dance existing in Natal on the basis of the EDTAM and its 600 students.
When the Horizon is the Ocean, Perspectives Broaden: Contemporary Dance in Maceió
Telma César –studied art at Unicamp and is professor for dance education. She coordinates the dance sections of specialized courses in the art department of Universidade Federal de Alagoas and is director of the Compagnie dos Pés, as well as member of Fórum Alagoano de Dança.
This lecture will begin by providing a historical perspective on the meaning of studying dance at the Universidade Federal de Alagoas and explains the role it plays in redefining the social recognition of contemporary dance in the city of Maceió. Fields of education, artistic production, the labor market and the spread of dance as areas of knowledge and art will be addressed.
